Pickup games
Tournaments
A bracket night: teams by hand or a blind draw, double or single elimination, a round robin or pools, every game called to a board and scored there like league night.
What a tournament is here#
A tournament is a set of teams, a bracket, and games played on the boards until one team is left. Every game is a pickup game, so it is scored on the same keypad as league night and pickup, saved throw by throw, and held on the tablet if the wifi drops. Find it from the Pickup page: Tournaments →, or at /tournaments.
Good to know
Like pickup, nothing in a tournament reaches the league: no averages, standings, stats or all-time records. It is kept in the venue's data download.
Setting one up#
- 1+ New Tournament, and give it a name.
- 2Pick how many shoot on a team (4 a side, 3, doubles or singles) and how teams are made: Bring your own or Blind draw.
- 3Bring your own: add each team with its shooters and averages. Start typing a name and your players come up from the book with their current averages; tap one to fill it in. Somebody new is just typed, name and average, and somebody already on a team can't be put on a second. A team short of shooters plays with a ghost, an empty place nobody throws. Or Use a league's teams and pick one of your leagues: every team comes over with its rostered shooters (not the subs) at their current averages, replacing any teams already there.
- 4Blind draw: tap Add from the book and tick the regulars who entered (each shows their average), type anybody else, one a line with their average (Dave P, 24.5), and Draw the teams. Shooters are cut into bands by average and every team gets one from each band, so the strong ones are spread out. Draw again if you want a different draw. Tap a team's name to rename it, and Replace beside a shooter to put somebody else in that place.
- 5Pick the bracket, how many games a match is (best of 1, 3 or 5), a longer final if you want one, in double elimination a shorter losers' bracket if you want one (best of 3 in the winners' bracket, best of 1 in the losers', say), and the seeds: by team average, at random, or As listed, where the arrows beside each team move it up or down the list and the top team is seed 1.
- 6Draw the bracket and start. From here the teams and the format are set.
| Bracket | How it goes |
|---|---|
| Double elimination | Out after two losses. Losers drop to a losers' bracket. With the reset final on, a team coming from the losers' side has to beat the unbeaten team twice. |
| Single elimination | One loss and you're out. Byes go to the top seeds. |
| Round robin | Everybody plays everybody once. Most matches won takes it; level, the tiebreakers you pick in setup, tried in order: game difference, head-to-head between just the teams that are level, total points, and last a one-inning shoot-off on the board. The usual order is game difference, head-to-head, shoot-off. |
| Pools, then a knockout | Small round robins first. When they are done, Draw the knockout takes the top teams from each pool, pool winners seeded first, crossed so pool-mates don't meet straight away. Ties in a pool are settled by the same tiebreakers as a round robin. |
Tip
The handicap is off unless you switch it on. Off, every point is earned, as at the state tournaments. On, the weaker team in each game gets the gap between the team averages, at the percentage you set, worked out the league's way.
On the night#
- 1The Boards at the top show your venue's boards (as many as your leagues play on). A free board offers Call next for the next match waiting: the winners' side first, then the losers', then the final, earliest round first. Or pick a board on any Ready match and tap Call. Nothing goes on a board by itself, and a board with a match on it can't take another.
- 2A called match shows how long ago it was called, and which call it is on: the 1st, 2nd and 3rd, five minutes apart. At fifteen minutes, if its game hasn't started, the board offers the forfeit.
- 3The game opens. It says which match it is and who chooses the order: the first game and a deciding game go to the cork; otherwise the team that lost the last game chooses. Tap … throws first for the team they pick, set the shooting order and start, then score it like any game. The teams themselves are set: a sub goes in on the tournament page.
- 4When a game ends, Game 2 → starts the next one, until a team has won the match.
- 5The winner moves on by itself, and the next match becomes ready. The bracket page keeps up on its own.
A team that can't play gives the match up with … forfeits on its card. A forfeit can be taken back until the next match has started. Take off the board undoes a Call before its game has started.
Under the bracket, The teams: tap a name to rename the team (its games still to finish, the board and the TV all change with it), or Sub in beside a shooter to put a substitute in that place, with their average. The sub plays the team's next game on; a game already made keeps who it was made with.
In a round robin or pools, the table says how teams level on wins were separated ("on head-to-head"). A tie nothing could settle says Level: not settled yet: shoot the one inning on the board, then tap the teams in the order they finished, winner first, and Save the shoot-off. While a tie decides who goes through, or who is seeded higher, the knockout can't be drawn, and the box above its button says which tie. A tie below the teams going through doesn't hold anything up.
Good to know
A wrong score can be fixed on the game, as in pickup, until the next match starts. After that, a fix that would change who won is refused and the board says so: the result stands. A fix that keeps the same winner still goes in.
On the TV#
When there's no league match on, the bar's TV at /tv follows the pickup and tournament games instead: every game on a board, inning by inning, the match score, who's up next and the results. The tournament page's 📺 TV link opens it. As soon as a league match starts, the TV goes back to the league by itself.
A game that has just finished stays up with its result for five minutes, then drops off, sooner if the next match is called to that board. An elimination bracket shows small under the games, from the round being played on, with the match on each board lit. With two tournaments on at once, they take turns on the screen every 15 seconds.
Following it on a phone#
🔗 Share on the tournament page shows a QR code and a link to its public page. Players scan it and follow the night on their phones: who's on which board and how the game stands, who's up next, the results, the bracket and the final places. It keeps itself up to date and nobody signs in. It shows names, games and totals, never averages.
